On the self-unravelling that happens when you have a crush
Award-winning writer Faima Bakar uncovers that familiar feeling
Welcome to the Guest Writer series where I commission one of my favourite voices to write something from their heart.
Faima Bakar is an award-winning writer who has a history of writing pieces that feel like diary entries. She is always uncovering what we are all thinking or in this case, daydreaming about. has recently launched her newsletter I Made This For You! newsletter on Substack so definitely subscribe to her warm words. There’s also a special playlist attached to this piece.
To read this new series, upgrade to The Aram extra where for £1.50 a week or £60 annually you'll get newsletters, interviews with prolific women of colour and I’ve even started LoveNotes, a very DIY podcast exclusive to Substack. Tell a friend to tell a friend and now onto the good stuff ❣️
‘He makes me remember the joy of existing,’ I type away with ferocious speed on my Notes app, before hyperbolically adding ‘I want to be alive for a little bit longer so I might steal a few more minutes with him’. All this hype and romanticised feeling can only mean one thing; I have a new crush.
My heart! It beats! And so wonderfully loud. Having a crush might be the most anxiety-inducing, soul-crushing experience ever but my gosh does it make you feel alive (they don’t call it a crush for no reason).
